Sabbath

Weekly Sabbath

Annual Extended Rest

What do the weekly rhythms of the Sabbath look like?

We like to say healthy things grow and growing things are flexible. Time is a created reality just as space and matter are “things,” so is time. We as humans like to be intentional about our spaces and our stuff, but what about our time? What kind of relationship do you have with time? Abraham Heschel speaks of the Sabbath day as a ‘Cathedral in time’ ordained by God for humans. We worship a God who dwells not on a special mountain or temple but in the place of consecrated time. So when in your life are you consecrating time, architecting your time to Sabbath? That is to Stop, Rest, Delight, and Worship.

Some tips to get started:

  • You must plan and prepare. in advance

  • Avoid Sabotage (Turn off your devices )

  • Start with a meal, light a candle, read a psalm, say some prayers

  • Is it restful? Delightful? Worshipful? Feasting, blessing, playing, dancing, singing, praying, laughing, telling stories, reading, painting, walking, exercising, exploring nature, napping, slowing, etc…

  • By Trial and error to build your own clarified list

  • Living things are flexible (don’t be too rigid)
